Does the EU AI Act apply to UK businesses after Brexit?

Yes. The EU AI Act applies to any business that places AI systems on the EU market or uses AI systems whose outputs affect individuals in the EU, regardless of where that business is established. Post-Brexit status provides no exemption.

What is the EU AI Act compliance deadline?

The main compliance deadline is 2 August 2026, when full obligations for high-risk AI systems under Annex III take effect. Prohibitions on unacceptable risk AI have been in force since 2 February 2025. GPAI obligations apply from 2 August 2025.

What is a high-risk AI system under the EU AI Act?

High-risk AI systems are those listed in Annex III of the Act, covering eight domains: biometrics, critical infrastructure, education, employment, essential services, law enforcement, migration, and justice. AI used for CV screening, credit scoring, fraud detection, and worker performance monitoring are typically high-risk. Full compliance obligations apply from 2 August 2026.

What are the penalties for non-compliance with the EU AI Act?

Penalties are tiered. Prohibited AI practices: up to EUR 35 million or 7% of global turnover. Non-compliance with high-risk AI obligations: up to EUR 15 million or 3% of global turnover. Misleading regulators: up to EUR 7.5 million or 1.5% of global turnover.

What is the difference between a provider and a deployer under the EU AI Act?

A provider develops and places an AI system on the EU market. A deployer uses an AI system in a professional capacity. Most businesses are deployers of third-party AI tools and providers of their own AI-enabled products. Both have independent obligations under the Act.
